Alex Scammon

Co-CEO / CTO

As founder, Co-CEO, and CTO of ISC, Alex brings a passion for building software engineering teams to solve challenging problems at scale. His extensive leadership experience allows him to empower each team member to contribute their unique talents.

Alex's day-to-day work is focused on leading a large team of open-source software engineers for G-Research. The GR-OSS team actively contributes to public, open-source data science and machine learning tools (including MLOps and HPC tools), and the infrastructure needed to support them at scale. Examples include: Apache Spark, Apache Storm, Armada, Arrow, Horovod, ILGPU, lightgbm, OpenStack, Parquet, TensorFlow, and XGBoost.

Alex takes a leading role in shaping the overall strategic direction at ISC. To this end, he leads our HPC, open-source software, and quantum computing departments. As part of his leading role in the broader open-source infrastructure ecosystem, Alex is chair of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation's Batch Working Group, where he leads discussion around cloud-native batch scheduling. This conversation spans the depths of Kubernetes to more traditional batch schedulers like Slurm, PBS, and LSF.

Prior to Insight Softmax, Alex served as Director of Software Development at Rackspace, leading a large team of engineers and championing open-source infrastructure tools like OpenStack. Before Rackspace, he was a principal engineer at Yahoo!, where he oversaw the company’s transition from QA-driven engineering processes to CI/CD-based processes.

Alex holds a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and lives in the greater Seattle, WA area.
